Change in sport

History of UAE sports, leisure, and society

Every country has its own special culture and society that is different from other countries; because of this deferens it is very interesting to study different cultures all over the world to get more knowledge about others life and to know more about the societies. In this report I will take a closer look in Emirati culture and life between the past and the present and to know how the concept of leisure has been changed through the decades. I started my report by an interview with Emirati old man lists to us about changes in sports and leisure practices in the UAE.

I choose Obaid for the interview because he started his carrier early, and he has been living in many different decades, before the oil and after it, so he knows the different and he can compares between the decades.

Khamis hamdan, 59 years old, born in Abu musa (island). He visited many countries all over the world that it was his dream when he was young.

From the interview, I realized that the sport and leisure have been important in every society long time ago, because the reasons for doing sport or leisure is the same and it did not change through the years because it have many benefits such as it Reduce stresses that comes from work and life.

As I find from the interview, People stared to care about their leisure’s in postmodern societies, this is due to the presence of several factors such as reduce working hours compared to the past And improved living conditions for most people, and the proliferation of entertainment venues everywhere.

In the past, the recreational places were limited in the UAE compared to today; there were no gardens or parks, and the markets are to shop only not to spend time. Maximum ways of entertainment for the boys were swimming in the sea or fishing, or playing football with the presence of some simple traditional games such as Al Qabba a game involving two sticks and two teams of 10 players each. The situation was more limited for girls, because the customs and traditions do not allow them to get out of the house, so you have less means to entertain, one of the girls games is “Almeryihana” which is rope that is tied to tree brunch, and the girl sits in the rope then the other girl push her.
